The inner countryside extending east as far as Pine Plains and North East, south to Stanford, Millbrook and Pawling displays a diversity of impressive country estates: small and large horse properties, farms with old barns and considerable amount of acreage, often preserved by The Dutchess Land Conservancy, colonial or contemporary homes nestled on the green plains, or secluded on the hills with stunning views. Bard College in the Northwest of Dutchess, a few minutes from Rhinebeck, offers the new Center For The Performing Arts designed by Frank Ghery. Vassar College, in the south, also hosts important art exhibits and many other cultural events.
Some of the public historic Hudson River estates have their parks open to the public for hiking, biking or just enjoying nature. The Poets Walk, 100 acres of beautiful Hudson River Preserve is another gift from "Scenic Hudson" to Rhinebeck and Barrytown. The Mashomack Preserve in Stanford, equestrian centers and hunt trails are part of a rich horse-riding tradition in Dutchess County.
